National Legal Academy at IIULER Goa: BCI Announces Mandatory Lawyer Training Hub


TheGeoAffairs : Following directives from the Supreme Court, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has confirmed that the newly proposed National Legal Academy (NLA) will be established at the India International University of Legal Education and Research (IIULER) campus in Goa. Speaking at the Deeksharambh orientation ceremony for IIULER’s 2026 academic batch, BCI Chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra announced that the flagship facility will serve as a compulsory post-enrolment training hub for newly enrolled advocates across the country. Modeled after the prestigious National Judicial Academy (NJA) in Bhopal, the institution aims to elevate professional standards across the Indian legal landscape.

The announcement was made in the presence of Supreme Court judge and IIULER Chancellor Justice P.S. Narasimha, whose bench had previously mandated the creation of the national academy. According to Mishra, young legal practitioners will undergo mandatory structured training modules spanning ten days to two weeks, focusing on lifelong legal education, legal technology, procedural skills, and professional ethics. The collaboration is also set to benefit IIULER students directly, providing them with continuous mentorship and direct interaction opportunities with supreme court judges, academic experts, and senior advocates.

To support this major infrastructure expansion, key stakeholders including Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Advocate General Devidas Pangam, Justice Narasimha, and BCI leadership met to finalize construction plans for IIULER’s permanent main campus. The state has allocated over 50 acres of land at Dharbandora for the project, with a targeted completion deadline within the next two years. Once fully operational, the National Legal Academy will stand as a central pillars in modernizing legal practice in India, ensuring that new attorneys enter the courtroom equipped for contemporary digital and regulatory challenges.
