Former Thai MP Chalong Reawraeng Confesses to Shooting Local Official on Live YouTube Stream


In a bizarre sequence of events that has left Thailand in shock, former Nonthaburi MP Chalong Reawraeng allegedly shot and killed local administrative president Thongchai Yenprasert outside his Bangkok office before calling into a live YouTube broadcast to confess. Midway through a news stream hosted by political commentator Anchalee Paireerak, Chalong phoned in to admit he had opened fire on Thongchai.

A retired police colonel, who later succumbed to a neck wound at a local hospital. The driver accompanying the official was also wounded in the arm and hand during the confrontation. Viewers watched as the livestream host reacted in visible horror, urging the former lawmaker to remain at the scene and await law enforcement.

The controversy deepened following Chalong's arrest, when authorities allowed him to address reporters in a six-minute police station press conference while casually smoking a cigarette without handcuffs. Police claimed the media appearance was granted so Chalong could offer an apology to the victim’s family, but he instead delivered a detailed defense of his actions, claiming he drew his weapon during a personal argument only after being shoved, and fired because the driver pointed a gun at him.

The unusual press gathering drew swift condemnation from Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who expressed outrage over the special treatment granted to the suspect, emphasizing that regardless of his former political affiliations, he is facing murder charges and full legal prosecution.

While regional authorities denied that Chalong received favorable treatment explaining that he was permitted to smoke due to extreme stress the incident has added immense pressure to the nation's ongoing debate over firearm regulation. Coming just days after a separate, tragic shooting incident in the country, this high-profile crime has pushed Thai officials to demand stricter enforcement of firearm possession, heightened police checkpoints, and systemic reform in a region already grappling with high rates of gun ownership.
