The global economy is currently locked in an intense tug-of-war between two opposing forces: a severe energy supply shock originating in West Asia and a massive, synchronised capital spending wave driven by artificial intelligence. Speaking to reporters ahead of next week's Group of Twenty (G20) finance ministers and central bank governors meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva noted that while global growth has held up better than initially feared, the balance of risks remains tilted to the downside. On one side stands a negative supply shock triggered by disruptions to critical shipping routes; on the other, a positive demand shock fueled by enterprise tech spending that is keeping corporate earnings and broader output afloat.
The fact that the global economy has avoided a sharper slowdown over recent months is largely due to emergency measures taken to absorb the fallout from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. With nearly a fifth of global petroleum historically passing through the narrow corridor, the disruption initially threatened to trigger runaway price spikes. However, major economies cushioned the blow through coordinated strategic oil and gas reserve drawdowns, a ramp-up in non-Gulf energy supplies, efficiency gains, and a temporary return to coal power generation in several regions. Benchmark Brent crude, which surged past $126 a barrel in the immediate wake of the conflict, has since cooled to the $80 to $90 range, providing vital breathing room for energy-importing nations.
Even so, Georgieva cautioned that it is far too early for policymakers to relax. Emergency stockpiles have been heavily depleted after months of drawdowns, leaving major economies with thinner buffers heading into the colder months. Any fresh escalation or transit bottleneck could quickly send crude prices climbing again. A renewed spike would reignite stubborn inflation, tying the hands of central banks and forcing them to keep benchmark interest rates restrictive for longer. Prolonged higher borrowing costs, in turn, would push sovereign debt servicing burdens higher, strain national budgets, and weigh on private investment.
Acting as the main counterweight to these energy headwinds is the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. What began primarily as a US tech phenomenon has turned into an international growth driver. Cloud providers, hyperscalers, and sovereign funds across the globe are pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into data center construction, high-end semiconductor procurement, and grid upgrades. This spending spree has provided strong support for global hardware supply chains and manufacturing, lifting corporate balance sheets and helping offset the drag from elevated interest rates.
Yet this dual-speed dynamic is creating sharp divergences across the world map. While advanced industrial economies reap the immediate benefits of AI-driven capital expenditure and productivity gains, lower-income developing nations face growing risks. Fuel-importing emerging markets, already squeezed by tight fiscal space and rising bond yields, must grapple with elevated energy and fertilizer import costs that threaten basic food security. Without the fiscal room to build out their own digital infrastructure or power grids, these economies face a real danger of being left behind by the AI transition.
The broader macroeconomic picture reflects these underlying fragilities. The IMF’s latest mid-year outlook pegged 2026 global GDP growth at a modest 3.0%, pointing to ongoing regional conflicts, trade fragmentation, and sovereign debt pressures as major headwinds. While the AI investment cycle has prevented a steeper global slowdown, managing its long-term financial stability risks remains an open challenge. As finance leaders head into the G20 discussions in North Carolina, the central task will be finding a balance between managing energy-driven price risks and building the fiscal room needed to support long-term, inclusive economic growth.
