In an inspiring move to celebrate decades of enduring friendship and strategic collaboration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has officially launched a public design contest inviting citizens of both Japan and India to submit commemorative logo designs marking the seventy-fifth anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations. The upcoming milestone in 2027 represents three-quarters of a century of formal diplomatic engagement between the two Asian democracies, an occasion that both Tokyo and New Delhi plan to commemorate through a comprehensive, year-long series of cultural exchanges, youth initiatives, technological partnerships, and high-level diplomatic engagements. The open design initiative offers creative individuals, graphic artists, students, and design enthusiasts across both nations an opportunity to shape the visual emblem that will officially represent all celebratory events, promotional materials, and government initiatives associated with the historic anniversary.
The public design competition is broadly open to all citizens of India and Japan, irrespective of their age, professional background, or current country of residence. In addition, Overseas Citizen of India and Person of Indian Origin cardholders currently residing in Japan are eligible to participate in the contest. According to official guidelines issued by the Japanese Foreign Ministry, prospective designers must submit their creative proposals digitally via email to the Southwest Asia Division of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau at japanindia75@mofa.go.jp. Submissions must include the entrant’s complete legal name, organizational affiliation, and a concise conceptual explanation detailing the creative inspiration, symbolism, and artistic thought behind the logo artwork. The formal deadline for receiving submissions has been set for Tuesday, September 15, 2026, with authorities noting that physical entries sent via postal mail will not be considered.
Following the close of submissions, a joint panel comprising designated representatives and subject matter experts from both Japanese and Indian authorities will evaluate the entries based on aesthetic excellence, visual clarity, cultural relevance, and symbolic representation of the bilateral partnership. A single winning creation will be selected to serve as the definitive official logo for the seventy-fifth anniversary celebrations throughout 2027. Results of the evaluation process are scheduled to be jointly announced by both governments in early December 2026, setting the visual identity for upcoming bilateral engagements.
The formal diplomatic relationship between India and Japan was officially established on April 28, 1952, with the signing of a historic bilateral peace treaty, making India one of the earliest sovereign nations to conclude an independent peace pact with post-war Japan. Over the ensuing decades, the partnership evolved through multiple structural elevations, progressing from a Global Partnership in 2000 to a Strategic and Global Partnership in 2006, and culminating in the elevated Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014. To commemorate seventy-five years of diplomatic affinity, the Ministry of External Affairs of India and Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs have mutually declared 2027 as the India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons, framing the commemorative year around deep-rooted civilizational linkages, shared democratic values, and forward-looking economic and technological integration.
As part of the Year of Shared Horizons framework, both governments have outlined ten commemorative outcome programs with a pronounced focus on youth engagement, creative arts, and academic collaboration. The week of April 28, 2027, will be formally observed as India-Japan Week, featuring coordinated cultural exhibitions, public seminars, and outreach activities across major cities in both countries. Among the flagship initiatives is IMAGE-75, a collaborative platform designed to leverage the immense popularity of Japanese manga, anime, and gaming among Indian youth alongside India’s rapidly growing animation and creative technology ecosystem to foster direct co-creation between emerging creators.
Cultural and spiritual ties will also take center stage through RASA-75, a year-long artistic odyssey celebrating visual arts, traditional music, contemporary performance, and heritage craftsmanship from both lands. Complementing these artistic initiatives is a dedicated Buddhist Pilgrimage Initiative, under which spiritual delegations from Japan will be hosted in India to visit ancient Buddhist heritage sites, reinforcing civilizational connections and promoting spiritual tourism. Sporting exchanges will be advanced through SPORT-75 and Cricket Kizuna-75, featuring athletic bootcamps, joint sports weeks, and friendship cricket fixtures aimed at fostering grassroots camaraderie.
Economic, scientific, and industrial synergies will be further accelerated through specialized platforms such as Business Connect-75, designed to link Indian manufacturing clusters with Japanese regional banking institutions and medium enterprises, as well as Mirai-Vigyan-75, which will showcase cutting-edge space and scientific collaborations including the joint Lunar Polar Exploration mission. Ahead of the anticipated annual bilateral leadership summit scheduled to take place in Japan, the launch of the seventy-fifth anniversary logo competition serves as an inclusive call for the peoples of both nations to articulate a shared visual vision for the future of Indo-Japanese relations.
