IIT Alumni-Led AI Startup Discovered Materials Secures $9M to Revolutionize Chip Cooling



TheGeoAffairs : Founded by IIT Madras alumni Akash Ramdas and Advaith Sridhar, has raised $9 million in seed funding to accelerate the discovery and integration of advanced materials for semiconductor chips. The investment round was led by Lightspeed India Partners, with participation from Y Combinator, Peak XV Partners, and prominent angel investors including Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram, and Thariq Shihipar. The deep-tech enterprise leverages specialized artificial intelligence agents to compress months of complex physical research into days, targeting one of the global semiconductor industry’s most critical operational bottlenecks: thermal management and power efficiency in high-performance computing hardware.

Modern graphic processing units and artificial intelligence hardware generate massive amounts of heat during complex workloads, with heat fluxes reaching levels comparable to space shuttle re-entry temperatures. This severe thermal output restricts processing performance, forces data centers to consume vast amounts of electricity and water for cooling, and limits the density of 3D chip architectures. Founded by Indian-origin innovators, Discovered Materials addresses this energy barrier by deploying autonomous AI agents combined with physics-based simulation models to rapidly synthesize, test, and screen prospective thermal and nanoscale materials.

The company's software pipeline runs continuous, cloud-based simulations capable of evaluating thousands of chemical and material candidates daily, a process that traditionally takes human researchers months to perform manually. Co-founder Akash Ramdas, who earned his undergraduate degree from IIT Madras before completing a PhD in Materials Science at Stanford University, emphasized that closing the power-efficiency gap between silicon architecture and human biological computation relies heavily on discovering novel material structures. Co-founder Advaith Sridhar, a Carnegie Mellon graduate with deep expertise in AI systems, noted that their models have already uncovered thermal materials matching the real-world performance of products developed over years by global chemical giants.

Alongside the capital announcement, Discovered Materials unveiled hundreds of newly identified candidate materials along with Material Discovery Bench, an open benchmark designed to measure how well AI systems solve complex, real-world semiconductor discovery challenges. The new capital will be used to expand the startup's engineering team, scale its physical laboratory infrastructure, and enhance its AI research agents. By linking computational screening directly with experimental validation, the IIT-founded company aims to dramatically shorten the timeline from laboratory discovery to commercial semiconductor fabrication.
