CPI(M) Accuses ED of Politically Targeting Pinarayi Vijayan in CMRL Case

In a sharp political escalation in Kerala, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has accused the Enforcement Directorate of politically targeting senior party leader and Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan through an orchestrated money laundering probe centered on Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited. Organizing a major political gathering in Kozhikode to counter the central investigative agency’s moves, the Left party launched a direct offensive against the federal government, alleging that statutory financial enforcement mechanisms are being weaponized to target opposition leadership ahead of key electoral and political battles. CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan declared that the recurring raids and investigative steps lack substantive evidence and represent a politically driven campaign designed to create an artificial public smokescreen.

The controversy revolves around an ongoing probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act into commercial financial transactions between private mineral manufacturer Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited and Exalogic Solutions, an IT firm operated by Vijayan’s daughter, T. Veena. Federal sleuths expanded the perimeter of their investigation by executing coordinated search operations across multiple premises in Kozhikode, targeting residences and business offices belonging to individuals within the personal and organizational circle of P.A. Muhammed Riyas, a sitting MLA, CPI(M) State Secretariat member, and son-in-law of Vijayan. The broadening of the investigation prompted Left leaders to argue that the agency has shifted its focus from analyzing commercial accounts to systematically implicating prominent party figures purely by association.

Addressing party cadres and the public in Kozhikode, State Secretary M.V. Govindan criticized the operational conduct of the Enforcement Directorate, specifically questioning its unusual practice of issuing detailed press releases during an active investigation. Govindan asserted that standard investigative jurisprudence requires agencies to examine factual records objectively before drawing conclusions, whereas the federal agency allegedly declares political targets first and tailors its investigations to fit predetermined outcomes. He noted that earlier searches conducted in late May at the residential premises of Vijayan and Riyas yielded no incriminating material, arguing that subsequent media notes referencing informal money channels and hawala routes were deliberate attempts to generate public suspicion without establishing concrete legal proof.

Drawing parallels to previous high-profile legal battles, the Left leadership invoked the decades-long SNC-Lavalin case investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation, asserting that central agencies intend to prolong the CMRL inquiry indefinitely to sustain political pressure on the party. Defending party cadres and trade associates searched during recent operations, Govindan reiterated that any commercial or corporate dispute involving CMRL would be handled by the concerned private enterprise through regular legal forums, while the party would confront attempts to penalize its elected leaders on political and mass platforms. The party announced a statewide campaign to mobilize public awareness regarding what it characterized as the misuse of central administrative machinery against democratic opposition institutions.

During his address, Govindan pointed to nationwide enforcement statistics, claiming that an overwhelming majority of recent money laundering cases have been initiated against opposition party leaders while ruling party members face minimal regulatory scrutiny under the same statutory framework.
