China is marking the 100th birth anniversary of its late former president Jiang Zemin with full state honours, culminating in a grand national gathering at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to preside over and deliver the keynote address at the centennial ceremony on August 17, underscoring the Communist Party’s political continuity, historical roots, and internal cohesion. The milestone places Jiang in the rare company of top foundational figures like Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Deng Xiaoping, who were all accorded full-scale state centenary commemorations.
The official remembrance comes with an extensive media and cultural push celebrating Jiang’s decades in public life and his stewardship of China's rapid modernization through the 1990s and early 2000s. State broadcaster CCTV has been running a 12-part biographical documentary tracing his path from an engineer in Shanghai to the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party. The series spotlights pivotal moments during his tenure, including China’s accession to the World Trade Organization, the handovers of Hong Kong and Macau, and the introduction of his signature "Three Represents" political theory. Alongside the broadcasts, senior party officials and state researchers have convened dedicated academic symposiums to revisit his contributions to socialist market economics and national governance.
Marking the milestone further, the People’s Bank of China released a set of four official legal-tender commemorative coins in gold, silver, and nickel-plated steel, engraved with Jiang’s portrait, references to his alma mater Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and famous public addresses. Special commemorative stamps, archival showcases, and public exhibitions have also opened across major cities, including his hometown of Yangzhou. For Beijing, the high-profile centenary serves a clear dual purpose: firmly honoring Jiang’s role in opening up China’s economy while reinforcing political discipline, unity, and institutional authority under the present leadership.
